Cate Dingsley has produced a riveting counter-narrative and recaptured a largely overlooked piece of motorcycle riding lore, and larger American history itself, in the essential essay on New-York City Black MCs, Ezy Ryders. Over a five-year period, the photojournalist painstakingly established key relationships built on trust, passion, authenticity to garner intimate access to some of the city's most storied Black MCs.

Afropéens est le résultat d’un travail de terrain sur des régions où les Européens d’ascendance africaine jonglent avec leurs multiples identités. Johny Pitts propose d’étendre le concept de Afropéanité, inventé dans les années 1990 dans le milieu artistique, aux domaines politique et social. Tout part d’un questionnement personnel : l’auteur est né dans une famille mixte, avec une mère européenne et père musicien afro-américain, et son témoignage personnel restera présent tout au long du livre. Johny Pitts part de sa ville natale, Sheffield, et parcourt ensuite les principales villes d’Europe : Paris, Bruxelles, Amsterdam, Berlin, Stockholm, Moscou, Marseille, Lisbonne… Dans chacune d’elle, il va à la rencontre des citoyens afro-européens et les interroge sur la perception qu’ils ont d’eux-mêmes. Comment se racontent-t-ils ? Comment vivent-il leur double identité ? Fort des témoignages qu’il recueille mais aussi de ses lectures (avec de nombreuses références aux écrivains Noirs dont il suit les traces, comme Baldwin, Fanon, etc…), Johny Pitts démontre la nécessité de sortir des clichés que sont «le nigga» (l’homme noir du ghetto) et «le king» (hipster, rappeur, footballeur Noir qui a réussi). Il montre que les afro-européens d’aujourd’hui forgent de nouvelles identités. In 1204, the Byzantine Empire was conquered by troops from western Europe ostensibly taking part in the Fourth Crusade. This was a hugely significant event for the subjects of the Empire, radically altering the Byzantines' self-image and weakening their state for the later conflict with the Ottoman Turks. Using the theory of ethnicity - a comparatively recent tool with regard to the pre-modern era - Gill Page provides fresh insight into the late Byzantine period, providing a corrective to nationalistic interpretations of the period of Frankish rule and more broadly to generally held assumptions of ethnic hostility in the period. A systematic analysis of texts in Greek from the period 1200-1420, from both ends of the social spectrum, is backed up by an in-depth study of Frankish rule in the Peloponnese to reveal the trends in the development of Byzantine identity under the impact of the Franks.
